The Intuitive Making
Freedom in Chemical and Large Format Photography Saturday, 07-12 09:00h - Sunday, 07-13 17:00h
Imperial Museum Gardens, Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro
Brazil / South America
This workshop, "The Intuitive Making," aims to transform the often-complex world of large format photography into an organic, intuitive, and continuous process. Just as we instinctively perform actions like walking or playing sports without complex calculations, analog photography can also be approached with feeling and intuition. Having explored chemical photography for years, I've discovered two paths to achieving stunning results: one meticulously calculated, and another, the intuitive way, born from sensation and feeling—a process as simple as skipping a stone across a lake.
In this two-day workshop, we will collectively deconstruct the idea that photography must be technical and mathematical. We'll explore creative freedom through alternative processes and playful exercises that awaken observation and sensation. Key concepts such as image formation in light-sensitive media and the operation of a large format camera, and the mechanics of chemical image processing will be covered. We'll also delve into camera building projects to stimulate your creativity. The workshop will utilize the latest CAM⇋LAB prototype, allowing us to photograph and develop anywhere, just like the images you've seen in the advertisements.
This is an invitation to reconnect with the essence of the image, far from industry standards. To ensure an intimate and focused experience, classes are limited to just 3 or 4 people. We'll have sessions at my home/workshop/laboratory and an inspiring outdoor location like the Imperial Museum Gardens or Rua Ipiranga Municipal Park. My approach avoids traditional classrooms and projections, fostering conversations guided by everyone's experience and understanding, truly freeing photography from rigid patterns and rules.
