Portraitfotografie bezieht sich auf die Kunst, ein Bild von einer Person zu machen, das ihre individuellen Eigenschaften und Merkmale zeigt. Eine erfolgreiche künstlerische Portraitfotografie konzentriert sich oft auf die Augen des Porträtierten, um seine Charakteristik herauszuarbeiten. Dies gilt für verschiedene Arten von Porträten, wie Schauspielerfotografie, Prominentenfotografie, Modelfotografie und allgemeine Porträtfotografie. Insgesamt geht es bei der Portraitfotografie darum, die Persönlichkeit des Porträtierten in einem einzigen Bild festzuhalten.
