In a moment

The capture during movement between poses often gives me the photo I prefer. I guess it shows a more natural image. I have not had much time recently and I still haven’t been properly through the photos from this particular shoot, but this caught my eye.

Saltwater ballads

I feel a connection to the mood of these images, the feeling the weather and nature during the shoot to that of the poems by John Masefield’s Saltwater Ballads

Here is an excerpt from the book:

SEA-FEVER

I must down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea’s face and a grey dawn breaking.
I must down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.
I must down to the seas again to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull’s way and the whale’s way where the wind’s like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over.

Sauvage | Diptych… encore

This is kinda like the B-side to my last blog. I really like this, however it has a different mood to it and therefore chose to exclude it. But like all good B-sides it deserves it moment.

Sauvage | Diptych

I am really fond of Diptych Photography, I feel it’s a great way to connect and empower images or elevate a mood.

These are from a forest series I shot with Manni an Estonian model in the wilderness outside of Helsinki.

The greenhouse collection

Last autumn i finally got the opportunity to experiment within an old greenhouse which is in our garden. The windows are dirty and some broken. I wanted to use these defects to create some mystery. We used some spot lights to make hard shadows and reflections. It was after darkness and the temperature had dropped to about 5C so time was limited, however I am happy with the results and hope to do more shoots in the greenhouse before its renovated.
Model Lauren braved the cold and brought life to the images.

The frozen & the damned

How do you get your mysterious imagination to shine in your image ?

When planning and during photo shoots ( as well as in a post processing environment ) I am constantly looking at ways to give the image some mystery. I particularly like motion blurs and unfocused subjects.
During a shoot I did with model Paloma in a quiet remarkable place, a frozen water dam in Finland a few years ago, it was difficult to choose whether my focus should be on the model or the amazing ice walls which have formed. I feel I may of missed an opportunity to maximise the potential for a story and mystery on this occasion.
This platform is full of wonderful artists whom create amazing photos with meaning, I wonder what your thoughts are to get that mysterious image and the viewer’s attention ?
