Henk is Emma-Helena's poodle. He looks very different from the poodles you normally see, but I think he's much nicer that way. He's a little, sweet guy and watches over Emma-Helena. He usually explores his surroundings quietly and curiously, but he doesn't like it when he sees or hears something unexpected. One of those things was my alarm bell in the studio. Whenever it rang, telling me to continue working on the wet plate, he would jump up, bark and run into the darkroom. Otherwise I always had to be careful not to step on him when he was cuddling up in the props.

However, I would like to show you just two pictures of Henk from my studio shoot with Emma-Helena. We also used the morning hours to take pictures of Emma-Helena and Henk at a nearby playground. Henk is not in all the pictures, but he was always nearby. With another dog, that is, because nothing is more interesting for a dog than another dog.

I wanted to make this shoot authentic and so I only took my Canon EOS 1-V small-format camera with me, with three fixed focal lengths: 35, 50 and 135 mm. I also had a monopod, mainly for the telephoto lens. And of course some rolls of film - Ilford HP5+. That seemed to me to be the right choice for this subject, because if I want it to be razor-sharp and grainless, I might as well take digital photos. But that's exactly what I didn't want to do here.

I developed and scanned the films in D-76 as soon as Emma-Helena had left. There were only a few pictures with technical defects, and I liked a lot of them very much. I am showing some here that show Henk's and Emma-Helena's joie de vivre, but also some thoughtful pictures with and without Henk.

It was a wonderful shoot, for which I am very grateful to Emma-Helena and Henk.

Henk had forgotten his toy under our sofa. I sent it to him in Holland.

Thank you for reading and viewing!
Ewald

I am always looking for new ways to express myself. My prime interest is in portraits, fashion and nudes, but I also shoot landscapes and still life.
I employ a variety of techniques. Digital, of course, but also analog photography including historic techniques.
